EMS Bike Response Team
General Information
The EMS Bike Rsponse Team for the City of Edgerton, officially began September 1, 2009. The purpose of the team is to reduce the time of treatment for patients stricken at large scale events and in areas of limited accessibility. The program will hopefully provide a boost to both community relations and morale for the personnel who ride. President Jim Blank from the Rock River Thresheree donated two 2010 Trek 4300 series mountain bikes to the Edgerton Fire Protection District.
About The Bikes
Bike 1 is set up for cardiac and airway emergencies. Bike 2 is set up for trauma related incidents. Both bikes are equipped with basic bandaging equipment, some splinting devices, ice / hot packs, as well as medication such as epinephrine for anaphylaxic shock. Both bikes also carry oxygen. Since the bikes allow easier and more rapid access to patient's at large events, they decrease the amount of time the patients go without medical care. Both bikes will also be used for search and rescue incidents.
Training
Personnel are trained to ride under punishing conditions. The training includes fast rides, steep inclines, down stairs, and over obstacles. Each EMS responder must be in shape and ready to ride a significant distance at response speed.
